It’s great to be able to enjoy some vacation time, but it is also great to come back and reconnect with colleagues and with our amazing students. We are beginning a new calendar year, but we are also in the middle of a school year, with many days of instruction and many events and activities to look forward to. As a District, I believe that we are fundamentally strong, and we are seeing many programs, departments, grade levels, and school sites make the jump to the next level of performance and achievement. As a recent example, this is a good place to once again congratulate Morningside School for officially receiving the California Distinguished School Award! Comments (-1) CAASPP Scores for the 2018-2019 Comments (-1) SCHOOL ATTENDANCE MATTERS September is our annual "Attendance Awareness Month." I am very pleased to report that our attendance rates remain at an all-time high! Our District-wide attendance rate remains close to 98%; this is much higher than the county or state average. There are no unimportant school days. Every day counts! Every staff member makes a difference in creating a positive school culture. Our students love to be in school, because it is a safe, happy, and exciting place to be. Our parents want their children to be in school, because they know the value of education and they know that their neighborhood school cares about their children. Comments (-1) Superintendent's Message - September Welcome Back, Everyone! Our school year is off to a great start as we work together as one team with one vision. I wanted to reiterate my remarks from our district breakfast last week. During a visit to the NASA space center in 1962, President John F. Kennedy noticed a janitor carrying a broom. He stopped the tour and walked over to the man and said, “Hi, I’m Jack Kennedy. What are you doing?” The man responded, “Well, Mr. President, I’m helping put a man on the moon.” He was right: although it may have appeared to some that this man was just cleaning the building, the president knew that he played a part of a tremendous endeavor; nonetheless, he was helping to make history. Comments (-1) Superintendent's Message October - November The California Department of Education has released the official CAASPP scores for the 2018-19 school year, and I wanted to congratulate our entire District family on a job well done! With the support and guidance of our teachers and staff, our students’ performance exceeded the Kern County averages in both English-Language Arts and Mathematics. The academic progress of our District is unmistakable; we are succeeding in our most important mission; and we are well-positioned to continue to achieve gains in the coming years. As we move forward, we will continue to show that by working together as one team with one vision, we really can achieve the extraordinary! Rosalina Rivera Comments (-1) July 2019 Message Happy Summer everyone! I hope everyone is getting some time to relax with family and friends. As usual, the District has been busy with many projects. I appreciate the efforts of those employees who have been working diligently to make sure that our schools are looking great and are ready to receive students in August. Most of our staff members will be returning to duty soon, and I am looking forward to seeing all of you at our Annual Breakfast on July 30th and during our staff development sessions. Comments (-1) May 2019 Message During the month of May, we celebrate Teacher Appreciation Week (May 6-10) and Classified School Employee Week (May 19-25). I would like to express my gratitude to all our employees for a job well done! Comments (-1) February's Message Everyone has a story, and each story is important. At DUSD, we are surrounded by stories of hope, commitment, sacrifice, struggle, and courage.
